This watercolor painting illustrates the demolition of Bastille, one of France’s largest prisons. It was a symbol of the growing middle class rising up and overthrowing the one’s who had more power. The bricks soon became collectors items, souvenirs of the people’s role in the outbreak of the revolution, and symbols of the way in which many more people wanted to commemorate the event than had participated in it. The destroying of the Bastille gave the French people hope that they could stand up for themselves against the king and his nobles. Nationalism was created as a result of this event, as people started to share this history and began to take pride of what they had accomplished. Every year on July 14, Bastille Day is celebrated. The event was given the honor of being a national holiday, because it was a major turning point in the French Revolution.
