Part of the revolutionary undermining of the monarchy becomes evident in this profile of Louis XVI, shown here without his wig or finery. There are many ways nationalism can be strengthened, but equality is one of the most important ways people can increase the sense of kinship. One of the driving forces for the French Revolution, Egalite, means equality and is part of Revolutionary motto. The third estate was pushing for equality between the second and first estate, and wanted everyone to pay equal taxes. By showing King Louis XVI without his wig or fancy clothes, it represents that the king is no more than any other man, and should have equal responsibility in paying taxes. This created shared sense of national kinship, as everyone wanted to be equal, and everyone was willing to go against the king to do so.
